DVD ideas

My main inspiration for my imagery running throughout the idents and with the DVD interface menu ideas, came from Love Actually. It's website design, DVD cover and beautiful animated present unwrapping the bow and opening to reveal the love heart and the menu options were particularly inspiring.

Audio Choice

I made a decision about what kind of music I wanted playing throughout the background of the idents quite early on in my development work. I didn't want a lyrical piece as I thought any songs about love would come across too cheesy and would distract the viewer from the action of the ident. I looked at one of my favourite soundtrack albums from Love Actually as I knew there were a few relevant, solely instrumental pieces on there. Two of them were slightly depressing, but the one which I immediately knew I wanted to use was the one below known as the Portuguese Love Theme.

The piece is beautifully uplifting and I loved the crescendo about half way into it and decided I was going to take the 10 second clip starting from 1:43

Screen Grabs

These are all the screen grabs I have taken from the 7 films I want to promote within my idents. I have picked out a few shots from each film that I think sum each one quite well. As the audience targetted are Rom Com fans, they should recognise which film it's from from these few clips. They will be used in my idents as backgrounds while kinetic typography moves in front of them, or be involved in part of the moving process themselves.

Type decisions

After my group crit, it was suggested that I look at the title sequence from Bridget Jones to help me decide what style of typography might work best:

Love Film Advert

Uses the simple black, red and white colour theme that I am thinking of using because it will link in smoothly with the red Film Four ending.

Screen Grabs

Thinking about important aspects that could come in use when creating my idents to give off the right mood to lure my audience in and stop them changing the channel.

A lot of these clips have come from the trailers, but that is where I found the films had many things in common to grab the audience in the first place, in terms of:
  • Typography. Colour. Layout
Love Actually - simple use of red, black and white

Mamma Mia, Hitch, The Holiday and The Proposal all seem to use a blue theme in their trailer and credits.

As the Sex and the City screen grabs show, many romantic comedies are known for panning round the city that they're set in as the title sequence appears:

I really like the typeface and colours used in The Women trailer - very feminine, crisp and will give me help when choosing relevant colours. I also like the way the words zoom into the frame - something I will bear in mind when creating my idents.
